For our third season we’re bringing back all of our previously sold out sessions to support you with your learning journey towards liberation. Anti-oppression for Artists & Cultural Producers

This workshop for artists explores the language, theories and practices of anti-oppression in depth. Institutional, community based and organizational strategies for building liberation and unlearning oppression are central to the content and objectives of the workshop. Creative, technical and collaborative models for building equity and liberation will be explored. Situated within a critique o white supremacy & the cultural order, Artists will examine the power dynamics that shape access, inclusion and opportunities in Canada’s arts and cultural landscape. The anti-oppression framework will be used to critique institutional dynamics as well as personal artistic practices. Participants will have access to a plethora of digital and print resources to continue their learning journey beyond the scope of the session.

This session uses the anti-oppressive framework and an intersectional approach to explore anti-Black racism within a Canadian cultural context. Internalized, interpersonal and institutional manifestations of anti-Black racism are contextualized through the lens of intergenerational trauma, systemic barriers and monolithic narratives. The impact of anti-Black racism, as it interacts with other sites of oppression is explored through case studies, personal reflections, quantitative and qualitative data. Systemic power structures and their impact on the spiritual, emotional, physical, financial and mental well being of Black communities as well as profound institutional inequities will be introduced and contextualized. Participants will critique and problematize current models for allyship and community engagement as well as explore interpersonal interventions and systemic transformations that cultivate liberation.

This deep dive, intimate session centres self reflection, locating ourselves and deeply contending with the ways in which we have internalized and invested in white supremacist economic, cultural, social and political ideologies, practices and hierarchies. The workshop explores community accountability practices and models for organizing, as well as ways of knowing and being from the BIPOC margins. Alternative economies, models for justice and ways of teaching, parenting and learning are central themes in the session. This session is ideal for artists, organizers and individuals working on cultivating a strong working knowledge of social justice issues, and who are committed to divesting from white supremacy and decolonizing internally, interpersonally and institutionally.

Cultivating Consent Culture

This is a workshop that uses the Anti-Oppression framework to understanding rape culture and it’s manifestations in learning institutions/on campuses specifically and in our communities more broadly. Through the lens of intersectionality, participants will explore the historical contexts, complexities of BIPOC communities (and their varying intersections) navigating sexual harm within oppressive structures. The resilience and transitional/grassroots interventions within our communities are explored alongside culturally safe & anti-oppressive interventions. The role of allies as well as better organizational/institutional responses will be explored. Practices and principles for fostering brave spaces and a culture of consent will be explored, along with problematizing existing models and practices. Participants will reflect on the disproportionate impact of sexual violence on marginalized individuals and communities.This session is ideal for individuals, educators, organizers and administrators in arts and cultural institutions and across disciplines. The session is deeply rooted in transformative justice practices and a culture of care built on meaningful, survivor centred interventions.

Radical Solidarity For a Collective Future

This workshop explores solidarity through power sharing, mutual aid, and risk taking through the lens of anti-racism. Situated within a Black feminist praxis, the session challenges the mainstream understandings of “allyship” and dares to imagine an intersectional approach towards a collective future. Participants will explore and critique how power dynamics, paternalism and other cultural features of white supremacy shape our organizing and reinforce injustice. Interpersonal accountability and a personal/collective justice practice that is oriented towards healing provided the foundation for a collaborative learning experience.

Shut it, Uncle Bob: Talking to Racist Family, Friends & Loved Ones

This workshop explores strategies and tactics for addressing racism from loved ones in meaningful and impactful ways. Participants will engage with a variety of scenarios that manifest implicit or overt bias. Common behaviors and tactics for dismissing conversations about race and minimizing the harmful impact of racist behaviors, beliefs and language will be explored. Participants will learn a number of techniques that take into account balancing relationships and creating long term sustained progress and change while understanding the roots of prejudice and tapping into the individual’s capacity for empathy.
